After a long career as a public architect, for which I was recognized with the Public Architect award in 2007 and elevation to fellowship in the American Institute of Architecture,
I established a private practice in 2012 to share lessons learned. As head of the Planning and Design Department at the Battery Park City Authority for over two decades, I oversaw the design of all capitol projects and developed design guidelines to direct construction by private developers for the 92-acre site in lower Manhattan. Providing greater pragmatic diversity, and more public amenity; establishing a sense of place, and insisting on design excellence resulted in great financial success for a project that the Urban Land Use Institute, in awarding its Heritage award in 2010, called: βone of the most significant major developments built in the United States in the past 100 years.β
